Berkeley astronomers Alex Filippenko and Adam Reiss were part of a larger international group that in 1998 discovered that the universe is not only expanding but is expanding at an increasing speed. This work led to the current idea that a mysterious “dark energy” makes up more than two-thirds of the universe.
